[Meta] Should we refresh the stickied posts/sidebars to reflect the state of the game in 2021?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 04:28 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I've noticed a big increase in activity/posts lately of people asking about the state of the game, returning to the game, class and server recommendations and so forth.

I think this is fantastic, there definitely seems to be a bit of a buzz going on after the launch of the new legendary servers, with Gundabad releasing soon, and with SSG's recent strategies for community engagement.

I'm just wondering whether the rest of the community thinks we should give this sub a bit of a facelift.

I'm thinking we need a new 'Welcome'-style stickied post to that explains a bit of the history of the game, the current state, future roadmap, and directs players to helpful links

I also think we need to update the sidebars on both the old.reddit and new reddit sites. A few suggestions:

    • creating an updated 'New Players Guide' thread that explains where to download the game, how monetisation and quest packs work, the benefits of VIP etc.
    • creating a new 'Returning Players Guide' thread that briefly outlines all the major expansions/quest releases in LotRO's history with their release dates, new systems and level caps; so if a player last played in eg. Helm's Deep, they can see what has been released since
    • an 'Upcoming Expansion' thread that consolidates what we know about Gundabad and the Brawler
    • a Legendary Servers thread that explains where each of the 3 legendary servers are currently positioned in the release cycle
    • removing references to turbine points, linking lotro point guides to the Wiki page https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Acquiring_LOTRO_Points_from_Deeds
    • adding a link to lotrohq for build guides

In general, I think we should be linking to the Wiki more - the Getting Started guide on the Wiki is quite detailed and would be a great place for landing new players: https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Getting_Started

A lot of the content in the sidebar appears to be quite old and outdated, and might lead to the wrong impression. This game is an absolute gem, but because of its age and size has a -lot- of content and it can be very confusing to come in with fresh eyes and try to figure out where things are up to. I just think it would be great to spruce up the sub a little to help direct new or returning players' queries.

Just some thoughts - keen to see what everyone else thinks.

    Future looking good for LotRO?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 11:05 PM PDT

With the positive reaction to executive producer Oleg 'Raninia' Brodskiy over the past few months, Cord of the rings introducing a much more frequent Q&A style of episodes, the soon to be released Gundabad and all the upcoming changes and just the overall positivity surrounding the game I'm excited for it. Is it safe to say the future of LotRO is looking good?

    Angmar unplayable due to lagging

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 01:27 PM PDT

Hello, I wanted to ask if it's just me or if it's also other people experiencing massive lags in Angmar to the point of being unplayable? It was especially bad in the areas right beyond the first settlement. I recently bought VIP and I was so excited to play in Angmar. Is there anything I can do to help it? I do have a rather old machine. Thank you!

May have just lost my account

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 02:28 PM PDT

Currently trying not to freak out, but upon updating the other night I go to log in and it tells me my password is invalid, have used the same one here for forever but even so I tried all the variations and alternate pws I use just in case it told me to update it while I was in a drunken stupor or something, but nothing. Emailed SSG right away but I haven't interacted with the hosting company of this game since the turbine days and I'm worried it may be unrecoverable.

Almost eleven years on that game, probably literal months of my life, and it may be gone forever :)

*Did try to reset the password but neither the website or the client are accepting the new one

**Also do have a ticket out, and a registered account at their help website

How do classic servers currently work?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 08:36 AM PDT

    Hello!

I'm a fan of oldschool MMOs (I currently play Final Fantasy XI on a classic private server). And I wanted to know the state of the classic (legendary, right?) LOTRO servers. Is it locked at a certain expansion? Is it representative of the classic game? Will it continue expanding towards the later expansions? Is it a good time for someone like me to get into it?Thanks for taking your time to read and answer these questions.

2 months since my VIP account is on lockdown, no answers from SSG support.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 08:14 AM PDT

Greetings, I post this to ask any advices how to escalate my case. My (15 years old, and VIP) account was hacked in June, and a 199 dollars payment was made, and my PW was changed by the perpetrator. Thankfully, since I made payments through PP, I contacted them and I got my money back quickly. I also wrote SSG Support a ticket about it, they replied that they got my ticket and my account has been locked down until the end of the investigation. And that was two months ago. Since there is a line " To add additional comments, reply to this email. " in the email, I wrote a month, then another month later asking what is the ETA, when can I get back my account, because this waiting time is preposterous. Sadly, this is not my first time, a good 10 years ago my WOW account was hacked, but they gave it back in like two days. Thank you for any good advices!

Returning player - where to go, what to buy, what to play?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 06:07 AM PDT

    Hello there!

I have a solid couple thousand hours playing, with the last time I actively played, being when Isengard was released.

I'm looking to come back and was looking for some advice on what's going to give me the best experience playing again.

    Server: Evernight

    Character

I have a level 75 Elf Hunter, and a level 75 Elf Champion - they're pretty equal I guess I never did much of the endgame content in/around Isengard, so not running high end gear.

I'm only looking to play the one, so which toon would provide me with the best experience going through Rohan/Gondor? Which would have the best solo leveling/questing experience?

    Area

Now, I'm pretty sure Rohan is next at level 75, but I never did the great river area, is it worth doing this before I head to Rohan - It's rated level 70-75 so not sure if there's anything worth getting from there?

Additionally is it worth buying the full Riders of Rohan expansion, or would I just be fine with Rohan quest pack and then the Helms Deep Expansion?

    Gear

As mentioned, I'm not running any high end gear on my characters, mostly quest rewards (I'm not big into crafting). I'm also still running maxed level 60/65 legendary weapons as I never really came across anything that beat them.

What's the best route for getting new weapons/armour/jewellery - do I need to do lots of instances to farm gear as historically?

I've looked on the AH, and all I can find is a handful (3-5) legendaries from level 80-100. Are legendaries no longer the sought after weapons, or is the playerbase dwindling too much for them to be easily obtained? Those I have found (that are identified) are selling for what I consider to be silly gold (300+) - silly because I can't afford it :(

    Any advice is appreciated :)

    Returning player: few questions

    Posted: 24 Aug 2021 02:34 AM PDT

    Hello everyone !

I was playing lotro for a while until 2015, and it seems my old character was lost when the servers closed, and from what I hear, it may be a while until I can recover it. Anyway, I'm planning to create a new one from scratch, but there are a few questions I have :

    • Concerning subscriptions, expansions, etc : obviously, I subscribed for a while at the time, bought a few expansions with the monthly coins, everything until dol amroth (included), iirc. But now that I'm not a subscriber, does this mean that the zones will be locked out ? Also, since I will start with a new character on a new server, will the benefits from having subscribed once still apply, or will I need to subscribe again ? (which would suck)
    • In terms of difficulty : can I do most of the solo content just by following the quests once by one, equipping whatever stuff I loot, or will I need to grind, craft and whatever to get better stuff ? I'm planning to play hunter btw.
    • Which servers have the highest number of players ?
    • What's the "correct" order for the zones/expansions ? I also seem to see people recommending to block your xp to be at the right lvl : what happens if you're not, except that the enemies are too weak ?

    Thanks a lot !
