    Always been interested in this game. Now i have the time. A couple of questions!

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 09:15 AM PST

    Hello r/lotro. I've come to ask a couple of questions because i have always been interested in this game and I love Lord of the rings and the lore around it. Now i have the time to start playing this so I wanted to ask a couple of questions.

    1. What server should i choose currently? I read that Treebeard is the current best but I still wanna know what is the best server EDIT: I'm from EU.
    2. How good is the story? Should i focus on it or just read the most important parts?
    3. How is the community currently with new players?

    Thanks already for reading and have a happy day!

    Interested in switching from Classic WoW to LotRO, but I have some questions

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 07:52 PM PST

    As the title suggests, for a variety of reasons, I'm considering switching from Classic WoW to LotRO. I read the stickied thread about the game and its current state, but I just have a few more granular questions that I'm hoping the community will be willing to answer. Thanks in advance!

    1. In WoW, the most important roles are generally the healer and the tank (though DPS is obviously important, too). Is this the same in LotRO, or is each role equally important?

    2. In WoW, hybrid/support classes (paladin, Druid, shaman) are often forced to min-max and focus solely on one aspect of their abilities, like healing or tanking. Is LotRO similar, or is there more freedom to just be a support class?

    3. In your opinion, which class is the best for someone who plans to play almost 100% of the game solo, but would also leave the door open to grouping? My personal preference is to be a support class with the option to heal, if that helps. (I did read the stickied thread, but I am just hoping for more opinions.)

    4. Is there a certain version of the game that you'd recommend buying? If so, from where? (Steam, etc.)

    5. Any general etiquette that I should know before embarking?

    Again, I really appreciate your time and responses. I have been a huge Tolkien fan my entire life, and I have always wanted to soak up this world.

    Galadriel's missing prophecies

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 09:09 PM PST

    One of my favourite moments in LOTRO is the Mirror of Galadriel instance in Volume II, where she gives you a prophecy based on your class. At some point later in the epic quest, the prophecy will be fulfilled, and there's usually a short bit of bonus content based on your class, explicitly telling you that the prophecy is being resolved. It's a cute little flavour moment and I enjoy it.

    Wiki points to the resolutions of the prophecies for every class except three at the moment: Brawler, Champion, and Minstrel.

    (heavy spoilers follow now, obviously)

    Analysing the prophecies to guess at what they might point to is always fun, and my guess is that two of the remaining three are fulfilled in Gundabad, but wiki hasn't updated yet to clarify it. I was wondering if any brawler, champion, or minstrel players could help me?

    Here is the brawler prophecy:

    The tower claws the sky, unhidden by the falling snow.

    Hearts hardened by defeat burn there, white-hot with vengeance.

    Beware the place of jungle, where rot festers in stately lines.

    With friends you dared the climb, yet you are alone in the trap.

    My guess is that this refers to 'A Silent Presence', where you, ImĆ”k, and Venko infiltrate an Angmarim tower amid the snows of CĆ¢r Bronach. This doesn't fit that well with the reference to jungle, but even so, I'm curious if anyone has completed the Gundabad epic quest with a brawler and confirm or disprove my guess.

    The champion prophecy is still:

    A shadow beneath the trees -- it moves without sound.

    Might will not avail you. It stalks without mercy, unrelenting.

    Someone bellows a challenge, and suddenly a beast is by your side…

    Whether this beast be friend or foe, I cannot see. I hope you will know the difference.

    I can't think of any moment that's a good candidate for this one, so I'm guessing its fulfilment is still a decent way in the future. If any champions can correct me, I would be grateful, but I don't have any specific guess here.

    The minstrel prophecy is:

    Stairs climb unceasingly into the heights.

    A city sleeps, its inhabitants gone.

    But not all, not yet. Those that remain dream a restless dream...

    Will your songs stir them to wakefulness, Minstrel? Is that to be your fate?

    I'm guessing that this might be fulfilled around 'Buried Secrets', where you descend a huge number of stairs into the heart of Gundabad and find MĆ³tsog dreaming. The way the prophecy is written suggests that you ascend the stairs, at least to me, but that could be misdirection - the stairs certainly climb into the heights even if you're going down - and there can't be that many people in long-abandoned cities dreaming restless dreams. So again I would be curious and grateful if anyone's completed the Gundabad story with a minstrel and can either confirm or falsify my guess.

    Can anyone help me with those questions, and if I turn out to be wrong, do you have any better guesses?

    We need to talk about Treebeard’s Community: a brief report on trolls

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 01:34 AM PST

    I've been playing LotRO on and off since 2007 on different servers. The game, of course, is the reason I keep getting back when real life forces me to take longer breaks, but most of the time, it's the community that keeps me going on. I won't say I haven't encountered minor nuisances in one or another server, but I think we can all agree that LotRO's community is way healthier than most of other MMORPGs.

    For the last few months, I've been trying to make Treebeard my home on the game. It has a good pace, I found a good kinship and most people on the server are really nice and kind, but… I think we need to discuss how its community has been derailing because of a handful of players. That's why I wrote this brief report, to organize my thoughts and share with you and SSG, hoping it's enough to request a proper action so the server can stay as healthy as we expect it to be.

    Report on Trolls: Treebeard Legendary Server

    This report was written to make SSG and LotRO players on Treebeard aware of how some toxic members from Organized Chaos (OC) and Situational Awareness (SA) kinships are coordinating their efforts to flame, troll and disrupt other players' experience on the game.

    Following the evidence provided on this link, it's clear that players like Clover (Astemal - Leader of OC), Redcoat (Casual - Leader of SA), Cecil, U, Crazen (Qwazen), Peledir, Haunted, Larger, Zik, Uwu, Lupin and others have:

    1. Cultivated trolling as an acceptable behaviour;
    2. Coordinated efforts to harass specific players, kinships and even SSG staff;
    3. Produced offensive and defamatory contents towards those targets;
    4. Used personal information and pictures of those targets in the mentioned contents;
    5. Fomented the production of those contents with gift-cards rewards;
    6. Shared those contents with the clear intent to promote collective harassment;
    7. Systematically encouraged other people to do the same.

    This kind of behaviour, while not taken seriously in some communities, is a subject of greater importance to people who suffered as targets, as we have seen from people leaving their kinships or even the game to avoid the drama and the toxic environment generated by the aforementioned actions. Thus, in order to request proper action from SSG, this report consolidates proof that unless people behind the flaming and trolling activities are held responsible for what's happening, Treebeard's population will keep suffering and dwindling.

    Grounding what this report claims, researchers like Thacker and Griffiths (2012)1 states that "reasons for trolling include amusement, boredom and revenge", and that trolling

    comprises "luring others into often pointless and time-consuming discussions" (p.373). More recently, Morrissey (2010) expanded this even further by saying "trolling is an utterer producing an intentionally false or incorrect utterance with high order intention [the plan] to elicit from recipient a particular response, generally negative or violent" (p. 77). Thus, it appears trolling is an act of intentionally provoking and/or antagonising users in an online environment that creates an often desirable, sometimes predictable, outcome for the troll. Morrissey also states that trolling is a complex intentional act, that some may consider an art. On the other hand, others have included trolling as a form of cyberbullying (Willard, 2007).

    While the forms of trolling can vary, as this report intends to show, there are at least three typical types of messages or actions that can be acknowledged as trolling:

    (i) messages from a sender who appears outwardly sincere, (ii) messages designed to attract predictable responses or flames, and (iii) messages that waste a group's time by provoking futile argument. From this, it is apparent that trolling often merges with several other online behaviours [...] a troll is an online user that can be uncooperative, that seeks to confuse and deceive and can be a flamer by using insults (Herring et al., 2002).

    On this regard,

    as Herring et al. (2002) noted, trolling often merges other online behaviours such as flaming. Adrian (2010) offers limited, albeit useful, insight into how an individual may troll during online gaming. Adrian names those who enact such behaviour as "griefers", a term used on those who try to ruin a gaming experience [...] furthermore, given the evolution of online gaming, it is possible that the behaviour of trolling has evolved to fit into the context in which the trolling is being used [...] and therefore, contains many other online behaviours that are used to disrupt others' gaming enjoyment.

    Following the presented, it's clear that the actions cultivated by OC and SA members inside LotRO falls into what's widely considered as trolling and flaming, including stalking, harassing, gathering and further sharing and using of their targets personal information to offensive and defamatory practices, having implications over Treebeard's community and violating LotRO's Code of Conduct, mainly over the terms:

    1. While participating in the Game or on the Game Website you must respect the rights of others to play and enjoy the Game world as intended by Standing Stone Games.
    2. You may not communicate any player's real-world information through the use of the Game Website, Game client or server software or any other means.
    3. You may not use or distribute sexually explicit, harmful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, obscene, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive language (including, by way of example, but not limited to, ethnic slurs and religious epithets), content, character names, titles, descriptions, or in-game labels (including, by way of example, but not limited to, offensive or inappropriate guild names, pet names and inscriptions).
    4. While playing the Game or participating in related services, you may not exhibit or partake in behavior that is disruptive to the Game's normal playability, causes grief or alarm to other players, or degrades the service performance or other players' client software (for example, deliberately using game bugs or loopholes to disrupt the game or dropping excessive items).
    5. You may not harass other players or Standing Stone Games staff, including by way of example, but not limited to, threats, stalking or abuse of others.
    6. You may not defame, abuse, harass, stalk, threaten or otherwise violate the legal rights (such as rights of privacy and publicity) of others.
    7. You may not restrict or inhibit any other user from using and enjoying the Game or related services. For example, disrupting the flow of chat in chat rooms with vulgar language, abusiveness, hitting the return key repeatedly, inputting excessively large images so the screen goes by too fast to read, use of excessive SHOUTING (all caps) in an attempt to disturb other users, "spamming," or "scrolling" (continuous posting repetitive text), are prohibited.
    8. You may not harvest (in an automated manner or otherwise) or otherwise collect personal information about others, including e-mail addresses, or use such information to send unsolicited emails.

    With all that has been reported, it's for the health, dignity and integrity of Treebeard's community, as well of SSG guidelines and Code of Conduct, that a proper and immediate action is expected to be taken, investigating and charging the players involved according to their responsibility on those actions.

    Epic quest: do you teleport?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 11:43 AM PST

    Hi, have been questing on and off for the last 4 years. I realized after a few levels in the game that the epic quests was among the most interesting aspect of the game for me. It followed a storyline , made me explore the world, got the opportunity to see characters and the landmarks from LoTR which was great!

    After a while with me gaming time limited, I started to teleport every occasion to progress the epic quest. I saved tons of time travelling and it kept me interested in the quest progression.

    I'n curious, how do you approach the epic quest? Do you teleport or take your time and reach every destination?

    Question on the Cloak of the Misty Night

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 03:49 PM PST

    So I've been after the Cloak of Durin's Crown for many years (Moria preorder exclusive), but there's no way I can ever get it.

    However, there are alternatives that have the same skin, or at least there were:

    The Cloak of the Misty Night used to be a Tier II drop from the Huorn bosses in Ost Dunhoth. According to the wiki, that's now obsolete.

    In the following thread on the official forums (I authored it as in those days I thought I might still be able to get the Durin's Crown version), somebody mentions a cosmetic version:
    https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?601293-Reintroduce-special-cloaks

    However, I have been following Lalia's rotations since 2015, and I have never seen it.

    Can anyone therefore confirm that this cloak no longer drops in Ost Dunhoth (or anywhere else for that matter) definitively?
    And if so, where else might I be able to get it? It's the skin I'm after, so I don't mind alternative names.

    Why Do People Say You “Miss Out” on Content From Normal Servers?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 03:34 PM PST

    Please forgive my ignorance, I've only recently started (lvl 12 Warden on Arkenstone) but I consistently read advice that if you want to experience all the content to play on a server like Treebeard ('legendary' server ?)

    My understanding is that servers like that are gated, sort of like classic WoW. So you can only do content up to whatever current xpac they are on? To me this seems to limit content more than the normal servers. On a normal server (such as Ark) I can go experience every zone and do quests from every zone in middle earth where as on Treebeard I'd be limited, so what am I missing to not understand this correctly?

    One of the reasons I joined a normal server is because I'm a big LotR fan and want to be able to check out all the places in the lore and interact with more of the characters.

    Are macros for skill activation against ToS?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 12:33 PM PST

    Title. Just returned and rolled a new Hunter.

    Wondering if simple macros for using out-of-combat skills to complete class/race deeds are allowed or not? I'm not trying to farm XP, loot, combat, etc- just get the deeds knocked out.
