    FAQ

LOTRO is 14 years old. Is it too late for me to get into this game?

Not at all! LOTRO is still under active development and receiving regular updates, along with the occasional expansion. For players who really value the raiding and endgame experience, there are kinships on most servers built around precisely that. For those who value a more casual experience, there is a great community, over a decade's worth of content to see, and one of the largest game worlds in existence to explore. Whatever your goal, we can help you get there.

Is this game really F2P? If not, what do I need to buy?

LOTRO is a hybrid of F2P and buy-to-play, with an optional subscription available. For free accounts, all content up to level 30 is available, and you'll have access to most systems in the game (skirmishes, crafting, player housing, the auction house, etc.).

Expansions (of which there are currently eight) are a mandatory purchase starting at level 50, and can be gotten one of two ways: 1) Bundled via the LOTRO Market's Expansion Trove (bottom of the page), or 2) Via the in-game store using premium currency (LOTRO Points), which can be gained by completing deeds, as a stipend from a VIP subscription, or with a cash purchase.

All other non-expansion content can be unlocked for the duration of a VIP subscription, or permanently with premium currency. It's recommended that you only buy content as you need it, purchase content during sales whenever possible, and use your earned LOTRO Points to bring down the cost of the content even further. Buying everything outright can become expensive!

For a more detailed rundown of the different account types, check the guide on LOTRO Wiki.

    Which class should I play?

All of the classes have their place, but it mostly depends on what is most fun for you. The LOTRO Wiki page on the classes can help you get a better sense of what each class excels at in most instances. And community member Louey7 has an entire YouTube playlist dedicated to showing off how each class plays.

If you're just looking for a good solo class to take through the world, a common recommendation is the Hunter. They can keep consistent damage at range and up close, and have good crowd control. They also have the rare ability to fast travel around Middle-earth once you've appeased the appropriate faction of each zone, which makes getting around a breeze.

    Which race should I play?

In trying to keep with Tolkien lore, LOTRO's classes are race specific. For example, Hobbits cannot be Rune-keepers or Captains. So it might be best to find a class that looks enjoyable first and then pick from the races that are available.

In general, your race selection will not have a great impact on your class. The biggest difference will be your starting zone, so don't hesitate to pick a race that you like. If you value getting the absolute best out of your class, however, each race has a set of traits that might synergize better with a certain class.

    Which server should I choose?

There's no wrong choice, but this might help narrow things down. The ten standard servers currently accommodate two regions: North America and Europe. From there, each region has at least one Role Play server: Landroval in NA (where RP is encouraged, not enforced) and Laurelin (English) and Belegaer (German) in EU.

There are also some servers that unofficially support folks and languages of certain regions:

    • Oceania = Arkenstone

    • Germany = Belegaer and Gwaihir

    • France = Sirannon

    What makes this game unique?

    • It uses JRR Tolkien's work as the foundation for all content - This is a big draw for many LOTR fans, because SSG (and Turbine before them) are absolutely committed to adhering as close to Tolkien lore as possible any time they add new content to the game. So much that SSG have a resident loremaster on staff whose job is to deep dive Tolkien texts, medieval literature, linguistics, as well as coordinate with other Tolkien experts such as the Tolkien Professor to ensure they are as accurate as possible. Of course, they have to bend the rules and fill-in-the-blanks occasionally in the name of fun, but chances are almost certain that if something is mentioned in the books, it's in the game. Check out this interview to hear the team discuss Tolkien.

    • LOTRO's Middle-earth is one of the biggest game worlds in existence - Seriously. After over a decade of consistent updates, the current map can take a player a little under three hours to ride from one end of the map (Thorin's Hall) to the other (Mordor). Taking into account all of the zones on either side of that route, that's a lot of Tolkien's rich world to get lost in and explore.

    • The community - There will always be bad apples in any game, but the community at large in LOTRO is known for being both helpful and creative. Concerts and other community-run events are quite common across most servers. Whether it's looking for folks to run content, explore the world, play music, or just to chat, LOTRO's got it.

    • That classic MMO feel - This may actually be a turn-off for some, but LOTRO came around in the days when MMOs still had to be massive and running content required some coordination with friends or the community. LOTRO has become a marriage of new and old over the years, but it's never quite lost that feel that was common among its contemporaries back in the early 2000s.

What's there to do in this game?

You can absolutely jump off the top of Minas Tirith, Denethor-style. You can make the four hour trek from the Shire to Mordor as a 1 HP chicken. You can break the lore and play "Concerning Hobbits" from the movies outside The Prancing Pony.

You can grow pipe-weed in the Shire, track the path of the Fellowship (and clean up some of their messes), decorate your house in Bree with items you've collected from your journey, explore iconic locations from the books, follow the main storyline across Middle-earth and all the way into Mordor. Outside of the standard MMO features, LOTRO provides a lot of room to create the experience you want.

"You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

Long time lurker, decided to make something

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 07:43 AM PST

I love being a bear! But I want to do better! How?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 01:27 AM PST

I recently returned to LOTRO after a few years. I was very interested by the idea of playing as a shapeshifter character, and bears are my favorite animal so I purchased the Beorning class. I have been greatly enjoying the class flavor and being able to solo clear group quests. Yet, since I love this class so much, and I cannot wait to play it everyday, I want to play Beorning as well as possible, master the class. I would love any tips and advice anyone is willing to share!

Amy news on scaling instances / group finder?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 07:34 AM PST

    Hi there,

I remember people talking about scaling content a while ago. I was wondering, why lotro does not have a useful dungeon-finder with scaling instances anyway? IMO it would ne a great thing, if players of all levels could just list together for a dungeon and get specific rewards.

What do you think? Would it be a great idea? Or a bad thing?

-- while some people did not like it, those scaling mechanisms work great for other games to increase activities across all levels! --

For 8 months waiting now for my account to get fixed.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 09:30 AM PST

It seems I'm not the only one with this issue. I tried to reset the password for my account but the password reset never appears in my emails. Then I opened a ticket at SSG support and now waiting for already 8 months to get the issue fixed. On Steam, Reddit, and other forums, many players are complaining that SSG is locking out lifetime VIP account owners. Yeah, me being a lifetime VIP too.

    Can someone help me, please?

Imbuement LIs not a thing anymore after the recent LI revamp?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 08:37 AM PST

If I am reading things correctly, it looks like imbuement isn't a part of the recently revamped LI system? Is that correct? Just making sure I am absorbing the changes accurately.

I was one of the people who somehow missed that this was happening. I just got home and put the code in and it worked. 1st of December the code is still usable.

Can y'all help me pick between guardian and champion

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 12:55 PM PST

Hey all, I'm looking to make a dwarf for my first character and I'm leaning towards tanking as that's what I've enjoyed in other games. If I'm not mistaken that leaves champion or guardian as options and I'm hoping someone can help me pick between the two. I'm mostly interested in how it is to level and not so much how good they are in the endgame

    Isengard Exp

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 04:19 PM PST

Oh man so while the 99 LP event was on I purchased Mordor, still had Isengard to get but as soon as I purchased Mordor Isengard had disappeared from the store.

Now that the event is over Isengard is back showing full price.

Anyone else see this issue, think if I contacted support it would get me any where. I have everything else, guess do I need Isengard.

    Cheers

PvMP Evenings On Landy Are Back!

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 10:49 AM PST

The Frost-Horde, Away Shall Fade and Nimrodel Exiles are excited to announce the return of the Tuesday/Thursday raid nights in the Ettenmoors on Landroval! Freeps and creeps are both welcome - the more the merrier!

On freepside, grouping and quest-gathering start at around 8:30 p.m. Eastern in Glan Vraig, with full-on action by 9 p.m. Be there early to get a slot in the main raid, but we'll split into two coordinated groups if numbers warrant.

Just a reminder that things have changed in the Moors with the last expansion. It is absolutely essential that you purchase a full set of audacity gear before even attempting to run in the Moors. Start by purchasing the "Browse The Shop" gear - max it out. It only costs silver/gold rather than commendations. That will get you to 24 audacity. Then, use commendations to purchase at least one piece of the Tier 2 or 3 gear from "Barter Items", which will get you to 25 audacity. That is a magic number - the big buffs really kick in at 25. Then you can work to ultimately get full T3 gear with commendations, but 25 audacity is an essential place to start. You will get wrecked if you have anything less!

    See you all there!

Quality and competence of lotro support.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:28 PM PST

How in the 21st century to play games with such a support service? I have seen a lot of complaints from people on the Internet about the slowness and trolling of players by lotro support. The ticket is not answered for 40 days. Are there really no legal ways (public actions, legal claims) to affect the quality of the support service? People are banned for no reason and emails are not sent to the mail, which they are obliged to send in case of a ban. Tickets are closed and deleted without response, it feels like the game is being deliberately destroyed. After the cases that I read and experienced, the charm of lotro was lost, what's the use of a wonderful gameworld and a great game if all your efforts, time and money invested in the game can be taken away in 1 second by a funny technical support employee?

    Whats your advice/opinion on...

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 01:42 PM PST

Hi to all of you Hobbits, Dwarfs, Elfs and Humans.

So I used to play lotro a lot between 2007-2010. I stopped playing because whatever (life I guess), but every now and then I have an itching to come back. (And usually do so for a few weeks)

But for some reason I get bored again quickly and feel like I am wasting my time. Comparing lotro to other games I tried to figure out why that is.

    • while I love Middle-Earth, most of the time I feel alone out there. Meaning: one rarely sees other players. (I miss running arround questing and seeing other players / grouping up - for example like in Classic WoW)

    • I enjoy dungeons. It appears there is no real way to run a lower-level dungeon with on-lvl players. Am I wrong? I miss something like swtor's Group-finder allowing me to get into a fun dungeon in a few seconds.

    • crafting, reputation, legendary Items. It feels like many of the engame activities can be done solo and consume a loooot of time?

    • I rarely have a session without lags and massive input-delay :-(

So what are you thoughts on that? Do you relate? And to the max lvl players: I used to like healing at endgame in dungeons or raids. How is your experience from a max-lvl perpective? Would you say the game/fun/population drastically improves at 140?

I'm really interestet in your perpective on lotro! Have a great evening :)

    Newcomer - some questions

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 01:49 PM PST

So, I've made my Dwarven Champion, Skirnar, and just finished the tutorial.

First question: UI scaling. I'm playing on a 4K monitor, and I know you can change the UI windows and the dialogue text size, but all the other text is still miniscule. Any way to change that, or am I gonna have to downgrade?

Second question: I notice the plugin option. Any recommendations?

Third question: Are capes a thing?
