    FAQ

LOTRO is 14 years old. Is it too late for me to get into this game?

Not at all! LOTRO is still under active development and receiving regular updates, along with the occasional expansion. For players who really value the raiding and endgame experience, there are kinships on most servers built around precisely that. For those who value a more casual experience, there is a great community, over a decade's worth of content to see, and one of the largest game worlds in existence to explore. Whatever your goal, we can help you get there.

Is this game really F2P? If not, what do I need to buy?

LOTRO is a hybrid of F2P and buy-to-play, with an optional subscription available. For free accounts, all content up to level 30 is available, and you'll have access to most systems in the game (skirmishes, crafting, player housing, the auction house, etc.).

Expansions (of which there are currently eight) are a mandatory purchase starting at level 50, and can be gotten one of two ways: 1) Bundled via the LOTRO Market's Expansion Trove, or 2) Via the in-game store using premium currency (LOTRO Points), which can be gained by completing deeds, as a stipend from a VIP subscription, or with a cash purchase.

All other non-expansion content can be unlocked for the duration of a VIP subscription, or permanently with premium currency. It's recommended that you only buy content as you need it, purchase content during sales whenever possible, and use your earned LOTRO Points to bring down the cost of the content even further. Buying everything outright can become expensive!

For a more detailed rundown of the different account types, check the guide on LOTRO Wiki.

    Which class should I play?

All of the classes have their place, but it mostly depends on what is most fun for you. The LOTRO Wiki page on the classes can help you get a better sense of what each class excels at in most instances.

If you're just looking for a good solo class to take through the world, a common recommendation is the Hunter. They can keep consistent damage at range and up close, and have good crowd control. They also have the rare ability to fast travel around Middle-earth once you've appeased the appropriate faction of each zone, which makes getting around a breeze.

    Which race should I play?

In trying to keep with Tolkien lore, LOTRO's classes are race specific. For example, Hobbits cannot be Rune-keepers or Captains. So it might be best to find a class that looks enjoyable first and then pick from the races that are available.

In general, your race selection will not have a great impact on your class. The biggest difference will be your starting zone, so don't hesitate to pick a race that you like. If you value getting the absolute best out of your class, however, each race has a set of traits that might synergize better with a certain class.

    Which server should I choose?

There's no wrong choice, but this might help narrow things down. The ten standard servers currently accommodate two regions: North America and Europe. From there, each region has at least one Role Play server: Landroval in NA (where RP is encouraged, not enforced) and Laurelin (English) and Gwaihir (German) in EU.

There are also some servers that unofficially support folks and languages of certain regions:

    • Oceania = Arkenstone

    • Germany = Belegaer and Gwaihir

    • France = Sirannon

    What makes this game unique?

    • It uses JRR Tolkien's work as the foundation for all content - This is a big draw for many LOTR fans, because SSG (and Turbine before them) are absolutely committed to adhering as close to Tolkien lore as possible any time they add new content to the game. So much that SSG have a resident loremaster on staff whose job is to deep dive Tolkien texts, medieval literature, linguistics, as well as coordinate with other Tolkien experts such as the Tolkien Professor to ensure they are as accurate as possible. Of course, they have to bend the rules and fill-in-the-blanks occasionally in the name of fun, but chances are almost certain that if something is mentioned in the books, it's in the game. Check out this interview to hear the team discuss Tolkien.

    • LOTRO's Middle-earth is one of the biggest game worlds in existence - Seriously. After over a decade of consistent updates, the current map can take a player a little under three hours to ride from one end of the map (Thorin's Hall) to the other (Mordor). Taking into account all of the zones on either side of that route, that's a lot of Tolkien's rich world to get lost in and explore.

    • The community - There will always be bad apples in any game, but the community at large in LOTRO is known for being both helpful and creative. Concerts and other community-run events are quite common across most servers. Whether it's looking for folks to run content, explore the world, play music, or just to chat, LOTRO's got it.

    • That classic MMO feel - This may actually be a turn-off for some, but LOTRO came around in the days when MMOs still had to be massive and running content required some coordination with friends or the community. LOTRO has become a marriage of new and old over the years, but it's never quite lost that feel that was common among its contemporaries back in the early 2000s.

What's there to do in this game?

You can absolutely jump off the top of Minas Tirith, Denethor-style. You can make the four hour trek from the Shire to Mordor as a 1 HP chicken. You can break the lore and play "Concerning Hobbits" from the movies outside The Prancing Pony.

You can grow pipe-weed in the Shire, track the path of the Fellowship (and clean up some of their messes), decorate your house in Bree with items you've collected from your journey, explore iconic locations from the books, follow the main storyline across Middle-earth and all the way into Mordor. Outside of the standard MMO features, LOTRO provides a lot of room to create the experience you want.

"You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

[Unofficial LOTRO Webcomic] Beginning of Book 2!

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 04:07 PM PST

After playing for 10 years with /played of 4 months just discovered the "Mess Hall" in Bree. Thought I discovered everything there is to discover, this one hit *close*. There is always somewhere new to explore in LOTRO, always something new to discover...

    Nearly seven years of playing...

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 12:13 PM PST

(Although with a couple of long and several shorter hiatuses over that period)
I finally got my highest-leveled character - my Man Captain on Brandywine (originally created on Gladden, then first transferred to Arkenstone before recently moving to Brandywine) hit lvl 130 this morning. For the first time I actually have a character at lvl cap on a server.

So... Skirmish Soldiers. What's good these days?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 08:48 PM PST

Been doing the Ill Omens event for the first time on my Minstrel. Just hit 130 the other day. My soldier is a Warrior who I nearly have maxed out. There's just one problem:

    He sucks.

Now, he didn't used to be so bad. But then that was when I was level 105 and Mordor was brand new. I read in a thread from two years ago that Sage is a much better choice over just about everything else. Is this still true? Should I switch gears and start leveling up a Sage or just plow through like I have been? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Wanna know how I got these scars?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 05:43 PM PST

Looking to get back into the game.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 05:21 PM PST

I played a bunch as soon as the first Gondor area game out, maxed a character in all, and I'd like to get back into and play some more of that character, or preferably I'd like to start a new character. And more preferably I'd like to play through with a group and get through all the story and stuff and set something up to be regular. If anyone is thinking about doing this or about it, HMU. I'm dying to get back into the game! Thanks for reading!

Returning Lifetimer, Re-Experiencing Story Without Grind?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 04:05 PM PST

    Hi, all,

I picked up LOTRO lifetime around 2008 and played regularly until around 2013. I've decided to take another foray into it. A few questions for you:

    1. I'd like to rexperience the story in its entirety (it's been 13 years since I experienced the early stuff) but I'd rather just do main story quests and not work on leveling via side quests. I have practically infinite LOTRO points, even after the expansions. I'm thinking about picking up the highest level Valar boost to get level 120 (or whatever it is) but going back and starting the story from the beginning. Combat will be trivial but I'll get to reexperience everything. Thoughts on this plan? Am I thinking about this in a good way?
    2. I have some older characters who had, at the time, a decent bit of money. Is it possible to transfer money between characters? Mail them?
    3. As a lifetimer, I have VIP. Aside from the Valar boost and the expansions, anything else I need to be sure to pick up in the store?
    4. I'm on the eastern coast, U.S.. Is the most heavily populated server Arkenstone or Brandywine? I feel like I've encountered conflicting things. Is one of those better for east-coast Americans?

    Thanks, everyone!

Possible bug. I was doing the introduction quests for Archet and I guess I got out of the border and so I am stuck in the invisible border and I can’t get back through to The introduction version of Archet-Dale.

Like the title says. Exactly what the title says.

    Suddenly crashing at loading screen?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 02:41 PM PST

I had been playing just fine, but today when I try to login, I get to character select, choose a character (any one, on any server), get to the Loading splash page ('Join the lotro community!') and ... hang. Progress bar never fills, music stops.

I've tried full screen and windowed. Tried 62 bit, 32 bit, 32 bit legacy. Updated my video drivers. Dx11, Dx10.

Nothing changed between last night when I was playing fine, and this morning where it 100% never opens.

This sound familiar to anyone? Not sure what else I can try.

    did lotro delete old accounts?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 11:54 AM PST

    hey all,

i used to play lotro all the time back in 2012-2015 but then stopped for a while. i'm pretty sure that the last time i logged in was late 2018 or early 2019 tho, because i took in-game screenshots for a uni project back then. i haven't played since then but wanted to do it today, actually! however, i don't seem to remember neither my username nor the email with which i was logged in back then. i can't log in with the username i'm sure i had and i also can't get a reminder sent to any email i used in the past years bc apparently they are also incorrect. i feel like this is impossible because i'm usually not one to forget login info, so i was wondering if there was ever a time in the last 2ish years where inactive accounts got deleted? :/

    About the damage classes

    Posted: 11 Feb 2021 04:53 AM PST

    Hello fellow companions!

I'm playing for 2 months now and leveled up to 119. Played all of the instances so far and finished really a LOT of quests. Then I used the valar Pack to 120 and i am now 128.

(I had a lot of freetime because of vacation time and i played another mmorpg before and that's why i am very efficient in achieving my goals.)

Here is my problem: people tend to say that some classes are totally not made to deal damage like LM, bard or runekeeper. Well, I play a runekeeper myself (chose red line) and I always tend to tank the bosses in the epic fights. Same with my LM (Same Story as above.) Sooo, is it true what they say or not?

I just started a bard- and the red line is a lot of fun.

It seems to me like a lot of the gamers just repeat what others tell them. (Worst experience was: champions are only meant to pull the mobs together and are then supposed to die.)

Is it possible that they just don't know how to play their classes? Whenever I see some guys play LM i can totally explain why they deal no damage... its just crappy play style. I don't want to give up my hope that they are just giving wrong facts made from ONE experience.
