One Lifetimer's experience returning to LOTRO

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 09:51 PM PDT

I started playing LOTRO in late 2007 and played it almost exclusively for 5 years. I played other MMOs before and after, but none sucked me in like LOTRO did, with it's stunning environments, excellent dungeon mechanics for it's time, and thriving social and raiding community. And there is just no beating Tolkien lore. I still have my SoA and Moria boxes, and played through the endgame of Isengard.

Although I never was much for alts, on my main I was a completionist. I have completed nearly every deed that was available at level 75, cleared every dungeon and raid, collected every set, every mount, every title. Name it and I probably did it. If it looks cool, I probably saved it. If it was an enemy, I probably tanked it 100 times over. You could say I enjoyed my time in the game.

I left for the same reason a lot of people leave - most of my friends left. Now, 8 years later, I wanted to return and see how the game fared.

I won't go into everything I had to do to get the game to work, I'll just say it was not quick and required quite a bit of time. But I did eventually get it to work. Kind of. I no longer have access to any expansions I bought in the past. The content is locked, and I am prompted to buy it again in popups- this includes everything attached to each of those expansions. I am also no longer able to log into two of my four characters. They're both alts, one is my dedicated cook in Michel Delving, the other has no location listed at the start screen. When I try to load into either, I'm permanently stuck at the loading screen. I have read every FAQ and forum post you can imagine. I have left the room and come back an hour later to see if anything would change, but no luck. Those two characters are apparently lost to me.

I have submitted numerous bug reports in-game, each of them are closed with no response. I have contacted Standing Stone three times via the website. A month has passed with no reply. Speaking with other players in-game, this is the expected norm. People regularly run into game breaking bugs, some of which don't even allow them to run the game, and they're left with no response from customer service.

For the last month I've logged in a few hours every week and mostly messed around in Bree, watching concerts and chatting. It's awesome seeing that people still participate in these events. I have honestly had a good time just being social. I also rode my ram from Thorin's Hall across most of the known world, which was a hell of a ride.

Unfortunately, my LOTRO experience came to an end yesterday when my game got stuck on an update of some kind. I have reinstalled, tried the fixes that did the get the game to work previously, and suggestions from forums. I have done the google-fu. Nothing works.

So it looks like this is the end of LOTRO for me. The game won't work, the way is shut. I have done all I can.

The above is copied from the last email I sent to SSG earlier tonight. I don't expect a reply, but it doesn't hurt to try.

The absenteeism of SSG is apparent, and a red flag of a cash grab company that is disconnected from it's players. Looking further into the company, and it's parent company Daybreak, they do not have the greatest reputation. Standing Stone has a 1.8/5 on the Better Business Bureau, and Daybreak comes it at 1.2/5.

It saddens me to see what this game has become. Every panel has an option to buy more X Y and Z. The cost of entry, whether it's the unusually high price of old expansions, or the enormous time and/or cash cost of reaching the endgame content that most people are doing (leveling zones are empty most weeknights), is guillotining the interest any potential new players may have in what was otherwise a great game.

So why am I writing all this? Because LOTRO is the best MMO I ever played, and I want it back.

A guide on getting you started on Legendary Items

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 10:16 AM PDT

    Hi Guys

I noticed a lot of people on my server (Belegaer) are still pretty clueless on how to get your LI's ready for imbuement. I also noticed that there isn't much of an intro in-game on what you need to do before imbuement, resulting in players having to grind a lot of unnecessary items to "repair the damage" on their LI's, mistakes they could have avoided if they had known it before imbuing. That's why I wanted to write a short guide on what to do before you imbue your LI's.NOTE: This is only important for your final, Lvl 100 LI, before that you don't need to imbue.

First, what items do you need? (Per LI)-1x Crystal of Rememberance (Anfalas or normal) [ https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Item:Crystal_of_Remembrance / https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Item%3AAnfalas_Crystal_of_Remembrance ]There is no sure way to farm those sadly. Try the AH or ask in Trade.

-1x Anfalas Scroll of Delving [ https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Item%3AAnfalas_Scroll_of_Delving ]Just get one in the Skirmish camp

-A LOT of Star-Lit Crystals (Max Tier 58 and Anfalas Star-Lit Crystals) [ https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Category:Star-lit_Crystals ]Max Tier 58 are available to trade for Embers or Motes in places like Skarhald, Estolad Lan or Galtrev. The Anfalas Star-Lit can drop randomly in MM instances, War of the Three Peaks instances, etc. The most reliable way to farm them is Throne of the Dread Terror on T2. Every boss gives 12x 7 Ancient Ithil Coins and another 12x 3 Ancient Ithil Coins, available once per Week. 6 coins give you 1 crystal, so it's reaaally easy to farm. Take as few people with you as possible to maximize your loot.

-A LOT of Scrolls of Empowerment (Max Tier 74 and Anfalas Scrolls of Empowerment) [ https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Category:Scrolls_of_Empowerment ]Scrolls of Empowerment are available the same way as Star-Lit crystals, but there are also some more ways to get them. You can get them in the Skirmish-camp, for Minas Tirith Daylies, etc. They are easy to get, but you need a lot of them. Best way is to farm as many embers as possible and get every attribute to Lvl 74, because they are way easier to get than "normal" Scrolls of Empowerment.

-A couple of Lvl 100 third age LI's

    -A lot of Experience-Runes

Now you know what you need and where to get it, but what next?

Well, first you need to know which legacies you need on your weapon. Beware though, most classes need multiple LI's for different trait trees (you need a 1h weapon for yellow cappy and a 2h weapon for red cappy, etc.) You either ask someone you know and copy their weapon or you can also look on https://lotrohq.com/ for some inspirations. The weapons on Lotro HQ are (almost) perfect for what you need to do in a raid, etc.

Now, let's get started. Get your unimbued LI and level it up to Lvl 31. Up until this level, you can choose which new legacies your weapon gets, so choose carefully. Now you use your Crystal of Rememberance (gets you a bonus slot for one more legacy) and your Scroll of Delving (let's you level up your weapon one more time, allowing you to safe a scroll of empowerment).

After your weapon has reached Lvl 31, you need to find out which legacies are still missing. But be careful: Some legacies change drastically when you imbue your weapon! Take Captain for example: on a unimbued weapon you might have the legacy "Pressing Attack Max Targets" which doesn't sound all that interesting. After imbuing it changes into "Battle-hardened Outgoing Healing Buff", which is one of the best legacies the Captain can have. Most legacies stay the same though, just be careful and look up your legacies on the Wiki beforehand.

Now you know which legacies are still missing. Take your third age LI's and level them up, choosing the legacies you want in the process. You can now simply destroy the LI, take out the legacy you want and put it on your main weapon. When you are all set and done, you should have 7 legacies on your weapon. Next step is to simply level your weapon to max Lvl.

The next part seems to be a bit controversial, since you can just imbue now. But I like to level up my weapon before imbuing them. Use your max tier 58 crystals and max tier 74 scrolls to level everything up to max. NOW you are finally ready to imbue your weapon. After imbuing, you just need to grind for scrolls and crystals mentioned above, to max out your LI's.

And that's basically it. Leveling up an LI is sadly a bit grindy and can feel boring at times. But it is incredibly important and it's basically impossible to run difficult content on max level without having decent LI's.

Bonus Tip: If you have the resources, get as many star lits as you can as soon as you reach Lvl 100. You can boost up your DPS on your weapon like crazy, allowing you to almost 2-shot everything until you reach Mordor.

Cheers guys, take care and have fun in Middle-Earth!

    Lotro-Guides

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:01 PM PDT

    Hi Guys, it's me again.

Just a couple of hours ago, I wrote my second guide on here on how to deal with your LI's ( https://www.reddit.com/r/lotro/comments/jke76k/a_guide_on_getting_you_started_on_legendary_items/ ). A couple of months ago I wrote a guide on how you can quest through the game most efficiently ( https://www.reddit.com/r/lotro/comments/hqfey3/questing_guide/ ).

Both of those guides have gotten really positive feedback and I enjoy writing them and helping out this awesome community. I was just wondering if there is anything you guys would like another short guide about. I'm by far not the best or most experienced player, but sometimes there is just not enough information about certain topics, so I would really enjoy it if I could write another guide for you guys. I can play around half the classes pretty decently (bear, RK, cappy, burg and champ) and I know a lot of things about raiding in general or the current endgame.

So yeah, feel free to let me know if I can help out in one way or another.

[Question] How much is this game going to cost me?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 02:12 PM PDT

    Hey there,

long time MMO fan here looking for something a little old school and different. Played LOTRO on release and loved it but not played since due to being suckered back into WoW.

Really want to get into LOTRO but there are so many expansions at pretty high prices! I dont mind subscribing but how much am I actually going to have to spend to do current content?

    Cheers

It's been 11 years since I played, so, quick question....

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:42 AM PDT

After installing and spending what I think was around 18 days updating, and going one by one to find which server my chars were on (Landroval), I am finally back in the game.

It was fun seeing my Minstrel again.

So my question.... where do people hang out now?

Last time I played Mines of Moria had just come out and I tore through that, and then quit. So when I logged in I'm in the Twenty-first Hall and not really sure where to go.

I'm trying to do the Trick or Trickery Festival Quest where you need to trick or treat at doormats people have put down at their houses.

I'm having real trouble finding any doormats so I wanted to start a list for people to be able to find them easier. If you have (found) a location I will add it to the list below. What are some things that can be done semi AFK?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 09:59 AM PDT

So I started a new class I've never played and I'm finally getting absorbed into the game again (played a ton 2012-2014 but then lost my drive to play), and I'm wondering what are some things I can do and be semi AFK? I work partially from home, so it would be nice to do some things in game while I work.

Launcher doesn't realise the game has quit

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:22 AM PDT

Has anybody else had the problem that even after the game itself has quit, the Launcher is still showing the "Bring game to front" button, rather than showing the option to select another world?

Also, that button doesn't seem to work anymore…

    Question about quest packs

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 08:23 AM PDT

Is there a list or something that will tell me how many levels can I earn from each quest pack and expansion. Would really help me deciding which ones to buy.

Am I missing something with Motes of Enchantment?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 07:56 AM PDT

So they added a barter vendor in the hub of the latest area and are giving Motes as mission rewards now, but why? Most of the stuff the barter vendor has is max level 120, and other than the Scrolls of Empowerment which basically grow on trees at this point there's really nothing you'd want here.

    What am I missing?

I'm level 28 and only barely got 300 coins which is half the first quest pack price and don't know how to farm coins.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 12:19 PM PDT

Can you tell me the best way to farm coins?

I don't know why they are so stingy with coins, 500 is about 5 pounds i think. They basically made it almost impossible to progress as a free player. meaning less people to populate dungeons, skirmishes etc, so also negatively impacts late game paying players.

On their site they advertise 100's of hours

The longer some one plays the more likely they are to buy stuff

They are driving off customers. They should have made it a reasonable grind between expansions like moria, so that the person is then more likely to buy it. as things are the average player might buy 2 or 3 quest packs get bored and leave.

I have no idea how many people get to end game. I can't imagine it is a signifant amount of people.

Also if you could buy stuff from steam i would consider getting stuff, cause i could just get pre paid cards, i don't feel comfortable using the in game store
