How popular is The Lord of the Rings in Japan?

How popular is The Lord of the Rings in Japan?

Popular is The Lord of the Rings in Japan?

Especially natives of the United States, largely isolated to contact with their own culture and only their own national boundaries, have a tendency to be very occidental and ethnocentric. Due to our lack of experience and awareness of the rest of the world, it's easy for Americans to apply their own predispositions and cultural theories to foreign countries without even realizing that they're doing so. The average American may be aware that Japan is a relatively racially homogeneous country, and maybe familiar with second-hand stories of Japanese isolationism, pride in national identity, and resistance to foreign concepts or imports. While it's true that Japan is an uncharacteristically racially harmonious country, I think that Western stereotypes of Japan assume that the country is far more intolerant and narrow-minded that it actually is. I think that the typical American perception of Japan is a country full of business suit-wearing, stoic traditionalists quick to take offense over the slightest impropriety or usurpation of native Japanese culture and tradition. There may be some small degree of truth in the stereotype, but I personally don't believe that Japan is nearly as rigid as many Americans believe.

According to World & I and further confirmed by Info Please, Japan's national literacy rate is higher than that of the United States. Japan is world-famous as a country of voracious readers, so presuming that as a nation Japan is very smart, it's reasonable to assume that Japanese society is also quite logical and reasonable. More thorough inspection reveals that perhaps more than any other country in the world, Japan is fascinated by fantasy fiction. From businessmen that read manga on the train ride to work to the perennial popularity of Godzilla and sentai TV shows like Kamen Rider to the creation and popularity of anime, Japan is a country that nationally relishes fictive flights of fantasy and science fiction. A previous "Ask John" article has already addressed the popularity of the Matrix trilogy in Japan. Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy is at least as equally successful in Japan.

    https://preview.redd.it/x0t0v7evf1451.png?width=602&format=png&auto=webp&s=53ecb0cef7c767c04596270a2b71323e946df6e9

Rather than feel outraged at Western "theft" of anime and manga conventions in The Matrix, or interpret usurpation of themes by Western produced fantasy films, comics, and novels, Japan eagerly embraces Western fantasy and science fiction. In fact, it can be said that certain types of Western fantasy such a graphic and vintage American and European horror films are actually more popular in Japan than they are in America. I think it's at least as well known in Japan as in America, if not more so, that J.R.R. Tolkien's epic novels are older than anime and have doubtlessly influenced the development of anime. Based on American perceptions of Japan, Americans presuppose that Japanese natives will be shocked and outraged to see traditional elements of anime appear in American action films. Or Americans believe that the Japanese will be confused or put off by Western fantasy films like Lord of the Rings. In fact, nothing could be farther from the truth. Japanese society is intelligent enough and rational enough to simply appreciate and enjoy speculative fiction regardless of its origins or influences. Sci-fi classics like Star Wars and Alien and Star Trek are immensely popular in Japan. Terminator 3 is one of the highest-grossing theatrical releases of 2003 in Japan. And Japanese viewers love the Lord of the Rings at least as much as Americans do.

    Help with my Warden Legacies

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 10:16 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

Long time player of the game but the class that eludes me the most is this one and I've finally reached level 100 through trial and error pretty much rather than pure skill. Anyways I'd be interested in finding out what legacies are best for Warden builds right now. I have looked at Dadi's guide and it has pointed me in the right direction but it seems a bit dated in that it uses stat based legacies which are so underpowered right now I can't see a use for them.

For reference it gives 5 good ones for each though which I'll list below for comment:

    https://dadislotroguides.com/warden-class-guide/10/

    Melee Weapon

    • Light Damage
      • A damage type we use a lot
      • ^
      • Less useful for tank, but considerable
      • Still useful for Ranged DPS since we apply Light Oil to our Javelin
    • Surety of Death Damage Over Time
      • Questionable for Tank
        • If there is nothing better
      • Definitely useful for melee DPS
      • Less useful for ranged DPS
        • Unless you plan to melee as ranged DPS?
    • Spear Gambit Damage
      • Useless for tank and ranged DPS
      • Strong for melee DPS
    • Gambit Lifetap Damage
      • Great for solo
      • Most effective as tank
      • More survivability
      • Increased damage
        • In combo with Resolution legacy for legitimate use?
      • Not as useful for DPS specs, but not necessarily useless
    • Ranged Damage
      • Simple damage increase
      • Useless as ITF
      • While a small amount, increasing damage by a % is very strong
        • 10k hit turns into 12k with just 20%

    Ranged Weapon

    • Defiant Challenge Damage Return
      • Only applies if you have the trait in the blue line
      • Great for tanking multiple mobs
      • Not useless as DPS if you use this skill since it force-taunts
        • Probably don't want to force-taunt and tank as DPS, but sometimes you do
        • I use it in my hybrid build for just this reason
        • Useless as Assailment
    • Fist Gambit Skill Damage
      • By now it should be obvious…
      • We use these skills a lot as melee damage and tank
      • Mostly useless as Assailment
    • Spear-Shield Gambit Damage
      • We use R121 and R1212 in ranged DPS rotation
      • Large increase
      • Helps scale crits better as well
        • (A large part in Ranged DPS)
      • Useless as tank and melee DPS
    • Shield Gambit Line Healing
      • More useful if you are tank
      • Very useful as tank for healing
      • Otherwise, as DPS, much less useful, but questionable at most

    Are Armour/Physical Mitigation virtues overrated?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 05:34 AM PDT

I mostly play Minstrel or LM. I've seen a couple of virtue guides (Here, or Here), that seem to be obsessed with putting as much in virtues that boost Armor/Physical Mitigation like Compassion or Innocence, while dropping morale based ones like Honor or Fortitude. Loyality also seems to get a lot of love for will-based classes, but even for Minstrel in-coming healing buffs don't seem to be that big, and vitality - morale boost is really poor, but than again it boosts armor and that somehow seem to be so great for authors of this guides. It seems strange to me, as from my early to mid game experience, it's not hard to cap physical mitigation, without help from any virtues. For me Honor and Fortitude seem best for light armor classes, as they offer big morale boost (which is not capped) and other nice benefits, like Resistance and Tact Mit.

However I only have early-mid game, so am I missing something?

Best way to get marks these days?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 11:08 AM PDT

Hi community, like so many posters here I've been away from the game for a couple of years, although I've never once in eight years been "caught up" on endgame content. I have a decent store of marks but I'm looking to bring a couple of alts up to high levels and I'm anticipating wanting more to equip them. So, what's the wisdom on farming marks? Grinding skirmishes? Killing those lieutenants for deeds? Landscape deeds? Epic battles? All advice appreciated.

    Minimalist main toolbar?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 02:38 PM PDT

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on cleaning up the main toolbar. From these plugins:

    https://www.lotrointerface.com/downloads/index.php?cid=24

I've tried CompactBar (both old and apparently updated versions) and SingleBar Clean Toolbar. Neither seem to work with the current toolbar in the game despite not being listed as outdated.

Does anyone have a minimalist or clean option for the main toolbar / action bar that works?

Quests Coupon Code vs On-sale Packs

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 09:35 AM PDT

I'm a bit confused regarding the current coupon and the items on sale in the store.

I've used the code which gives all the quest and deed packs but what do I need to buy from the store to round out my collection better?

    Best Race for each class?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 03:16 PM PDT

I will be making one of each free class in my 1 month of VIP for possible future use and wanted to know what experienced peeps think each class should choose for race for ideal min/maxing so to speak.

I have read this here: https://www.gamersdecide.com/articles/lotro-best-race

    from the announcement found here:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/lotro/comments/e11jbm/articles_on_the_top_classes_professions_and_more/

but I am getting the impression lots of people do not agree with it. This thread in particular is saying newbs like me should NOT be following these guide as they're off the mark on lots of what is stated to the point is being called misinformation. The thread is from 2017 so I don't know if the reddit announcement has been updated but I get the feeling not.

I have read this but it's from 2017 so I dunno if it still relevant?

    https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?660821-Best-Race-for-each-Class&p=7801564#post7801564

Now I know if you are not going to to endgame content and even then it may not be "the end of the world" but I would still like to know what endgame people think is ideal?

Help a newb and set me straight with real correct min/max information please!

Minis Switching to Yellow before boss fights to buff the Fellowship, then switching back to blue: What buffs do you use?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 03:38 AM PDT

Hi! I don't play mini so I don't know enough details on this except that minis can buff fellowships just before boss fights. I'm asking for a minstrel kinmate who's not on reddit:

What skills do you use when buffing fellowships in this way and what does each buff do? Is there any particular order in doing them? Any other tips? Thanks!

    VIP Quick Travel Question

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 08:43 AM PDT

Hey everyone, so I just signed up for VIP status last night, and I'm wanting to understand how Quick Travel works for VIP players. How do I access quick travel? Is it just quick travels between the beacon things in each city? Or is it based off the stablemasters that you've reached/unlocked so far? I went onto the stablemasters map and when I clicked on one of the ones that I had, it still said that I needed mythril coins to quick travel there. Let me know what I'm missing/misunderstanding. Thanks!

Samwise Gamgee's Starter Pack Vol. II

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 12:14 PM PDT

Samwise Gamgee's Starter Pack Vol. II

So I had this post https://www.reddit.com/r/lotro/comments/gzohic/samwise_gamgees_starter_pack/ - folks were super helpful. But unfortunately, I tried everything like changing my address to some postal code in the U.S, VPNs, proxy, different browsers, new amazon accounts... Everything. But every time I try it gives me this :

    https://preview.redd.it/jqwytskunx351.png?width=1260&format=png&auto=webp&s=6e8b9ffd7f90cb9bbe7e8bdaf66b1985493e07d8

Well, it indeed is in-stock and some folks have access to it and can go all the way through placing the order, mostly people from the U.S.

It gives you a warning :

    https://preview.redd.it/4wm6gis5ox351.png?width=501&format=png&auto=webp&s=d75a607cbb785e8bc7711d23da58f0ef805a6982

But this is not fair at all...

So any Amazon customer can help me with this dead-end? Like how can I show myself as a U.S customer other than the ways I tried? Or as a last shot, anyone who is legit able to buy this item and can sell it to me? I don't know, I'm pretty much helpless right now.

https://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Online-Samwise-Download/dp/B00EUHVOW2 this is the link to the product, try for yourselves.
