Beginner questions on some of the different melee classes and playstyles (Cap, Guard, Warden, Beo)

    Posted: 04 May 2020 11:25 PM PDT

Hi, returning beginner here (last played to lvl 40-ish in 2012 but those characters are gone, which is ok). I have spent some time trying out different classes to level 10-20 to test for my playstyle and have a few questions since lots of the guides online seem out of date. My playstyle is more of a stand-your-ground rather than kiting and play solo because I have limited and irregular time to play.

    1. Does the Captain get more active skills soon (lvl 10-ish) because out of all the classes I seem to be waiting for cooldowns more and using auto-attack more than any other of the classes I've tried. Which is a bit boring. I like his look and feel, but at the moment it's just boring and I play to have fun.
    2. Do Guardians get good self-heals and does their damage keep up? I'm loving my Guardian but I prefer a class with self-heals. Really loving him so far though.
    3. When does the Warden get good self-heals? The wiki on solo play praises the Warden but my heals at lvl 12 do almost nothing? They heal like 15% of my life when they've run through.
    4. Does the Beo get decent AoE ? I like Beo but I want more AoE damage (reason I'm loving Guardian so far - tough and AoE) - my Beo is lvl 20 currently.

I've played a bit of minstrel (no damage at all - what happened?) and RK (don't like inductions) so I guess casters aren't for me. Might try out a Lore Master.

Thanks for reading and maybe responding.

    Thanks Guys

    Posted: 04 May 2020 08:26 AM PDT

Thanks to some helpful folk on here, I got my first LI this morning, at LVL 45, though I did skip a lot of the quests around gates of moria, which I believe I've now lost.

I've now gone away to level it up and get as many quests/deeds done this month around Misty Mountains / Angmar and Forochel and hopefully end up with enough LOTR points to buy Moria at month end!

    Thanks Everyone for your advice

Got any tips for a new player?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 01:30 AM PDT

Hey there r/lotro, on my quest to search for old MMOs to play out of boredom, I came to the conclusion that I want to try Lotro.

So I am asking you guys if you have a few tips for me:

    • General tips for new players, things people wish they knew before playing for the first time

    • What are good classes for solo play? My favourite things to do in MMOs are just questing and leveling, I am not much of a dungeon guy. I would like to stay clear of Tank classes, and prefer DPS classes - doesn't really matter if melee, ranged or magical. I already know about the recommendations from the sticky - Champion, Rune-Keeper, Hunter. But what are YOUR opinions about this?

    • Any Addon recommendations that are not already included in the sticky?

    Thanks everyone in advance!

    Gargamel cloak

    Posted: 04 May 2020 02:40 PM PDT

So, as my characters name is garglemel, I'm looking for a cloak/robe that is almost completely one color(even better if it has patches on it.) Do any of ya'll know of a cosmetic item/cloak of some sort that would fit? Thanks.

    Haven't played since 2007

    Posted: 04 May 2020 12:25 PM PDT

So had a few questions because I wanted to get back into it.

What do I need to buy to actually play the game, and how expensive is it?

What server should I play on?

Is loremaster a viable class for end game?

Is the Class Trait Point Issue Fixed? (Recently Returning Player)

    Posted: 04 May 2020 05:35 PM PDT

I recently returned to LOTRO, played on Arkenstone, Ithil and little Landy and Anor. When I played, I think the biggest issue with the game was class trait points. It was actually one of the big reasons I felt the need to leave. Back then, you had to do outdated content to get class trait points which were really important to your character progression. I felt like this should have just not been a thing. Last complaint, but to me, it was even worse than the LI, balance, slayer deed, lag, mounted combat, rubber banding, etc. problems. It was really depressing looking at it for the legendary servers coming up on them.

Looking at the LOTRO Wiki (https://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Class_Trait_Point), it not only looks like the issue isn't fixed but was actually made worse with more points locked inside the Book of Mordor! I know the wiki is often outdated, so thought I would double check, or just make sure I am not missing something obvious! It looks like you still need to do specifc, outdated, irrelevant content just to progress your character in this game!

Please tell me I am missing something, seems like there should be an obvious other way?

Any news on new Legendary servers?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 09:49 AM PDT

I played LOTRO way back at launch up until Moria, had a lot of fun but stopped playing for various reasons. I came back for the Legendary Servers a couple of years ago but was disheartened by everything being really easy and the lack of Ettenmoors being available to do between expansion updates.

Is there any news on new servers opening up? I'm really interested in giving the game another serious go but would like to do it on pace with other players moving through content again.

    Screen Scaling Issue. Please help?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 04:39 AM PDT

I have a 1440p monitor. I want to run LOTRO @ 1080p Full Screen Windowed. I would rather run the game @ 1440p, but the bags for inventory dont scale and I dont want to squint. But if I set the game graphics to 1080p and just full screen. No Problem. Set the graphics to Full Screen Windowed, and the game changes the resolution to 1440p. And I dont seem to be able to get the game to run at 1080p full screen windowed unless I scale the monitor resolution to 1080p before I open the game. Which seems silly to do that prior to running this one and only game @ 1080p. Is there any help, or do I just have to give up on LOTRO because Standing Stone can't bring this game into the 21 century? Thanks
