Why isn't Beorning part of the "best tank" discussion?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2021 04:40 PM PST

I've played Guardian, Warden, Captain, and Beorning, and it has been my experience that blue-line Beorning is far easier to tank with than anything else, for the following reasons:

    • The default rotation is dead simple (Thrash, Armour Crush, Claw Swipe, Bees, Vigilant Roar). There are no chains or states or gambits to manage, meaning you can keep your attention on positioning and timing.
    • You have two of the best enemy debuffs (Armour Crush and Bees). Armour Crush increases incoming damage on the target by 15%, and Blue Bear Bees slow target's attack and inductions by 30%, which is essentially a 30% damage mitigation for the raid.
    • You have great, spammable self-heal that turns Wrath into Health (Recuperate)
    • You have an amazing panic button (Thickened Hide) usable every 2m that essentially makes you invulnerable and heal to full
    • You have a big bonus pool of Morale
    • You have three force-taunt attacks on short cooldowns (Vigilant Roar every 10s, Thunderous Roar every 30s, Menacing Maul every 30s)
    • Aggro acquisition and hold is trivial due to both single-target and AOE roars having a unique threat reflect mechanic

For those that don't know about that last point, the Beorning threat-reflect mechanic makes aggro control trivial. Doing either roar puts a 14 second buff on yourself, during which anything that attacks you generates threat on itself against you.

So you start a fight with the AOE roar. Everyone attacks you and builds threat against you. Even without you hitting them further, they've already built positive threat, which means they won't jump on the first healer to heal.

Vigilant Roar, usable every 10 seconds, also puts this threat-reflect buff on you -- against *every* enemy attacking you, not just single target you hit with Vigilant. So you've basically perpetually got this threat-reflect buff on you.

Those aggro'd on you will stay on you unless the mob/boss has a threat reset mechanic -- but even then, your force taunts are on such short cooldowns that it's not an issue to reclaim and hold aggro.

This allows the Beorning to do kite-tanking when it's useful, also. You can keep threat just by using your single-target taunt and bees (the ol' flee'n'bee).

So what's the deal? What is it that other tanks have that Beorning tanks don't? Or is this just a matter of most players not having experience with Beorning tanks? Is it players not understanding / not wanting to manage Wrath?

Concerning Wrath, you almost never need to leave Bear-form while blue-line tanking as a Beorning. If you're making effective use of Rush and Counter and Thrash, you'll generate lots of Wrath. But... in those rare circumstances where you've had to burn Wrath to stay alive with Recuperate, all it takes to regen to full wrath is to switch to a man and do 2-4 melee attacks. Then you'll be back at full and can turn into a bear once more. This is rare though.

The only other reason you'd need to switch to Man is to use some Guarded Attacks, but this shouldn't be necessary if you're getting regular Parries/Evades, which also grant the Guarded mitigation buff.

We hear drums, drums in the deep. They are coming.

Minas Morgul / Three Peaks worth it for $10 each if I'm nowhere close to them?

I'm normally of the "only buy content when you need it" mindset, though I make exceptions for worthy sales. Is this one of them, or are sales that cut these expansions down to $10 frequent enough to not rush into?

Right click not working to select, everything else is double clicking

    Posted: 24 Dec 2021 03:14 PM PST

UPDATED: It's working now. Reset the dpi on the gaming mouse to defaults and it is working okay - but a little slow - for now. Now I have to figure out why it is feeling so stodgy. Did not check the other mice, however.

Okay, so my right click to select (and move toward the selection) is no longer working in LotRO. Also having to double click to select anything, making the game fairly unplayable for me right now. Right click works everywhere else except in game. Tried 3 different mice, and tried those mice on other computers and they are fine - everywhere but in-game. Rebooted the computer every time I did anything. Ran repair, deleted and rebuilt the keybinds file as directed in one solve, and nothing. It seems a lot of people have had this happen over the years, but not seeing too much in the way of a solution. Any of you have this happen and what was your fix? Have never had this happen before and have been gaming for decades. It is very odd.

    Talk to me about tanks

    Posted: 24 Dec 2021 06:53 AM PST

I'll slowly be returning to the game with an eye on raiding and am looking for some help figuring out what tank to roll.

I've played as a Warden and Guardian before but would love some insight as to what works best/easiest to find groups moving forward.

    Thanks in advance

    In demand classes

    Posted: 24 Dec 2021 06:40 AM PST

What classes are more in demand for instances? Looking to start a character on Arkenstone and don't to be waiting for hours just to find people to group with in instances.

A question about the warden class

    Posted: 24 Dec 2021 10:05 AM PST

Do you need to have an active sub in order to access the warden class after you have purchased it, or is it available on f2p afterwards?
