Legendary "Difficulty" Server - Return of the Fellowship Manoeuvre

    Posted: 29 May 2021 12:49 AM PDT

TLDR: Fellowship Manoeuvres should get a revisit this upcoming "difficulties" update, encouraging group play when the new difficulty mechanic is introduced.

    Warning Long read!

First off, want to make it clear, this is only my thoughts, and may not be possible to implement before this/these new legendary server/s launch, however, I want to share the ideas nonetheless, as I think it could be a very positive change for Lotro in general, not just the new legendary servers. Second reason is that I felt strongly about the issue of Fellowship Manoeuvres, to the point where I (finally) created a forum account, just to find out that there is a timer before being able to even reply to the suggested changes in the Lotro bullroarer forum, so instead, I created a reddit account, and am writing this reddit post, and then reposting it to the forums (a shorten version likely!) as it seems to be where some ideas get implemented into the game from community feedback.

I would like to say a big thank you to the SSG team for attempting to make the landscape more enjoyable, even requiring a group at some points to progress (Encouraging group play in an MMO, crazy idea, I know!) However, there are a few quite major unintended "quirks" due to the new mechanics. This "fix" could address issues such as corruption removal before level 20, potential counterplay for random 1 shots, and generally making combat more engaging for a fellowship.

Fellowship Manoeuvres (FMs), or Conjunctions are a relic from the past of Lotro, where a once powerful, Lotro-Unique system which could turn a fight to your favour if done correctly. I use past tense here, as this is no longer the case, and FMs have not scaled at all with current era Lotro, to the point where, some 130s don't even know what they do/how they work, as FMs are nothing more than an extra stun to most now days. However, I think with the release of the new legendary servers that are being hinted at, and the recent difficulty changes in the latest U30 bullroarer, I feel as if a revisit to the Manoeuvres system would be fantastic given the timing, with several new features added to make it much more worth, thus giving group players more incentive to challenge themselves and try hitting more complex FMs (Looking at you Length Six Straights!!). This system is already in the current game, and so SSG has the foundations already for a revamp Fellowship Manoeuvre system.

    My idea is as follows:
The most basic solution requiring the least effort is as follows: buff ALL (maybe except power, that seems to work quite good already) forms of buffs from the Fellowship Manoeuvre. The damage/bleeds have LONG been obsolete, and even 1 skill can out damage these far trickier manoeuvres, so a BIG buff to damage both upfront with Ent's Strength (Red) and Spider's Guile (Yellow) should be addressed.

However, the more complex solution (and crazy idea), should be adding buffs/debuffs as a result of more complicated FMs. FMs have always been far, far trickier to pull off than your standard skill rotation, as they can occur randomly, or started by a few classes, starting at level 12 with Burglar's Exploit Opening, which, just so happens to almost perfectly align with the current level 11* cut off for choosing difficulties, can mix up combat a fair bit. Fellowship Manoeuvres can be a high-risk high-reward system, with timing and coordination being key in order to turn a fight into the free peoples favour, requiring all 6 players to correctly hit in order, however, if performed right, will add an effect to players and/or enemies to aid in battle. Some ideas of new effects from FMs are as follows, however I would love to hear other ideas in case I miss anything super important :)

+x% Incoming Damaging - With a damage focused FM, a incoming damage debuff can be placed onto the enemy, which will be a different approach to combatting the new corruptions present on the mobs, different from the standard corruption removals. This could be a tiering up debuff, with the more people contributing to the FM, the higher incoming damage percent. This could also potentially be split into 2 different effects, one for +x% Incoming Tactical damage, and one for physical.
+x% Damage Reduction - A more defensive FM can lead to this buff, which would be placed onto the fellowship, allowing for a protective effect, for when a fight has, or even a tank may call out for a damage reduction effect, to survive these new super hard hitting mobs. Again, I think tiers of the buff would work, with more players contributing, leading to a higher reduction in damage. (Could also be changed into a debuff for Outgoing damage, instead, to make it not too OP, with fights with massive amounts of adds)
Corruption removal - The big one. Considering the direction with this new server, I believe a corruption removal FM would be fantastic, and would definitely see players once again using the FM system, being that bit extra complex, for the highly skilled players to achieve. Adding a powerful corruption removal manoeuvre would be a game changer, especially in lower levels where corruption removal are not always present. This would need to be heavily balanced however and fine tuned to find , could be anything from removing a couple of T1 removals, or even a removal to affect a tiered corruption (In my eyes, it would work similar to Scribe a new ending in the RK kit, with a new corruption removal over time like effect). Up to developer's interpretation, however I think this would be a fantastic change and would really encourage the use of FMs once again.

There are more that could be explored, such as +x% Incoming Healing onto the fellowship, perhaps (if possible) a flat/percent based finesse increase, as a current issue with the new difficulties (I believe it is being looked into though). Many more ideas could be explored with buffs coming from FMs, and would make for a more engaging group dynamic, but these few should cover most of the basics.

IMPORTANT: Please do NOT make these new fellowship manoeuvres easy to do (i.e. everyone just hit red as soon as the FM comes up.) These NEED to be complex, as this rewards player groups that are able to hit the full 6 man FMs, requiring preparation before the fight with orders, and timing during the FM. These SHOULD be hard to hit, however should reward player groups that can manage to hit tricky FMs consistently.

The pros for this revamp are explained above, however, I think FMs are long overdue for a revisit/revamp, as this system (as far as I know, upon light research EQ2 had a similar system, however I can't comment on this, as I never experiences EQ2.) is quite unique to lotro, and it has been obsolete for many years. With percentages, would remove the need to be constantly updated for future level caps, and would be consistent throughout the entire game, so at any given level, they can still be useful.

Now, the cons of this revamp, is that new FMs would need to be thought of, considering "damaging" FMs have mostly been taken up with the 12 Draigoch FMs, however, (And this is speculative, I don't claim to know how of the back end of this stuff so unsure if this is even possible) those do not work on landscape (as far as I know), so it wouldn't be out of the question to have these as landscape only FMs, or maybe just Draigoch gets slightly different treatment for FMs and everything else has new FMs. This will need to be figured out.

*This may be subject to change, as the community has been rather vocal about level 11 being too low a cut off. There is many saying level 20 being a more appropriate cut off for choosing difficulty, which wouldn't actually affect this idea of a revised, enhanced Fellowship Manoeuvre system, as FMs, stated above, start as low as level 12 with Burglars, and around 20 for a few other classes.

Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy days to read this :) , as I feel very strongly about this issue and I believe would be a positive change to the game! Please share your thoughts on this, and if you agree or disagree with my suggestions, or if you just want to discuss how these would work further.

    Cheers! -Flinn

    New player's question

I heard from my friend there were lots of spiders in the game, is that true? If so, is there any way to get rid of their texture because I'm kinda arachnophobic. I really jstu have issues with big hairy ones so if theyre like not as big as a house I'll be fine
