Thinking about returning to LOTRO, got a few questions

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 11:17 PM PST

    1. How microtransaction-heavy the game is? Do I need to become a subscriber in order to have a comfortable experience?
    2. Do I need to attend group activities in order to complete the game's story? I plan on playing mostly with a friend, but don't like doing group activities more often than occasionally (I played lots of MMOs back in the day and got seriously fed up with some people's sh*t).
    3. Do I need to craft in order to have good gear, or can I make do by picking up some gathering professions, earning profit by selling mats and buying the items that I want?
    4. Does anyone know a "relaxed", light RP server? Somewhere where people like to stay in character but don't mind bending the lore in the name of fun.

I daydreamed about LOTRO in the shower today

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 06:18 PM PST

And it went something like this:

The game launcher loads and I find a new post titled "New Management: What to Expect"

My heart skips a beat and I click on a link in the post that directs me to a stream where a new lead developer seems to be greeting the community. He introduces himself and his fellow coworkers around him who are all be wearing LOTR themed t-shirts:

"I am not only the new lead developer, but the new publisher and owner as well, as I've decided to buy the management of this beloved IP to see it not only return to its former glory, but surpass it."

The stream chat, which started as just a few hundred viewers and is now reaching a thousand, unsurprisingly burst with praise.

He continues: "Although we are a business that seeks to remain afloat, we are not willing to sacrifice the integrity of this game, the loyalty and support of its players, or the reverence and love shown for its universe in order to make a profit. In fact, we would rather break even or lose money than continue to see such a beloved game world from the father of fantasy himself be run down even further into its ruinous state. Many changes will be made and not a moment too soon."

Chat begins to spam 'CHANGES CHANGES' and '#CHANGES'

"There will no longer be a VIP status or an LP currency behind which many of the game's core features are locked only to frustrate and inconvenience new and old players alike, driving them away from this beautiful game. There will be 'Backer's Status' which will allow players that wish to support our new endeavor to better the game for everyone to support us in exchange for a choice in new monthly cosmetic options, entry to developer-run events, and the opportunity to submit feedback and work hand in hand with our team in order to provide features that the community wishes to see implemented."

Everyone in chat now begins to spam 'PAY TO BACK!' 'P2BACK!'

"In fact, starting tomorrow, every Tuesday and Friday will be community feedback days during which we take suggestions from our players on the forums and on our bi-weekly streams in order to address and work on the this amazing and dedicated community's most pressing concerns. We will have devs dedicated to the meticulous balancing of classes, gear, and PVE content as well as the reviving of PVMP, among many other things. An end there will be to developer silence and anti-player policies!

Which brings me to the next point: the immense pay wall for new players and the ceaseless, predatory grind at the endgame are gone as of next week. The legendary system will be completely reworked to be intuitive and above all player-friendly. The incessant grind created for every level increase by the previous team will be completely overhauled as per our community's feedback. The virtue system will once again be reworked along with every other system that was purposely twisted in the name of inconvenience in order to be monetized.

Purposely disrupting free and premium players, locking the game behind hundreds of dollars, over-saturating Tolkien's world with intrusive monetization and providing significant disadvantages to those unable to dish out cash is a depraved and wicked manner to run a game such as this and now, thankfully, a thing of the past.

New players will be able to play completely for free prior to the expansions and be given the option to pay for each expansion as they wish once they reach that stage in their journey, unencumbered and unmolested. The game will surely attract and retain a large population of players wholly unfathomable to the previous developers who in ignorance or apathy cared not at all about new players that were highly unlikely to stick around and spend an inane amount of cash.

Lord of the Rings will never go out of style and upcoming years show much promise; we wish to nurture and grow the white tree of LOTRO for all future players that wish to come and explore this incredible world. And through our passion we wish to mend its wounds and keep its heart untainted for future generations."

The stream chat went quiet in awe and building anticipation almost as if the words they were hearing were too good to be true. A few moments later a spectacular eruption of joy shook chat as players realized that hope for the game, which they loved and had cherished for years, was rekindled.

I then came back to my senses and realized I had been in the shower for 45 minutes and had hardly picked up the soap.

Back to hunter or guardian for a returning player?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 04:12 PM PST

I haven't played LOTRO in years. I have a Hunter and Guardian who are both in their 80's. Which would be easiest to get back into for mostly solo PvE? Does one of the classes and specs tend to have an easier rotation? Are there any relatively current guides out there that guide you in their play, at least in their rotation?

    Thanks!

[LFF] Level 65 Warden Looking for Friends

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 09:36 AM PST

    Hey there, r/lotro team!

I'm getting back into LOTRO after a minute or two away and have finally gotten my Warden up to level 65. I was wondering if any of you fine Middle Earthers would like to party up, maybe tackle some of the group content at that level or maybe do some progression through the Isengard story/instances together.

If needed, I wouldn't mind helping you finish up in Enedwaith (still haven't completed myself) or Mirkwood to get you leveled appropriately.

Also worth mentioning: This is just gauging interest, kinda stuck at work for more than a couple hours. Also, server is Arkenstone.

The Ironguard - A Laurelin kin for new players

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 06:59 AM PST

    Mae govannen travelers!

I wanted to post this as an FYI to new players who are looking for other new players to group up with.

A group of 7/8 of us recently started playing the game and felt that many of the larger, older kins weren't really focused on helping new players get through the game with on-level company.

What we are is a kin focused on going through the story content together and enjoying the multiplayer aspect of Lotro to its fullest by actually having other low level people to party up with. We're very active, laid back, and we welcome light RP (we aren't an RP kin but we'll do our best to accommodate).

Our focus is on coordinating weekly/biweekly group gaming sessions where we do story instances before moving on to regular instances/skirmishes.

We have just finished the Lone Lands Epic quests and are all lvl 30-34, with a few exceptions. Most of us also have lower level alts that we can use to play if you are not there yet so don't let that stop you from getting in touch with me. Feel free to comment on here if you are interested or message me directly.

We use discord to coordinate gaming sessions so I will recommend you create an account if you haven't already :)

Character names are Bjurn (lvl 33 Man Warden), Thunderella (lvl 33 High Elf RK), Glamdri (lvl 30 Dwarf Guardian) and Aramthorn (lvl 18 Man Cappy).

    DrunkenFrenchman

PS: Feel free to still message me if you want to play together but aren't looking for a kin

[Crickhollow] Looking for members of the "Winter's Heart" kinship

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 01:37 PM PST

I had an alt create a kin with my main character's name so I could get a second house for storage space. I'd been eyeing up the kin house right next door to my own (shire homesteads, my house is 5 Brookbank street, kin house is 4 Brookbank), but before my kin level was high enough somebody else bought that house and I had to buy one halfway across the neighborhood. I'm trying to get into contact and discuss the possibility of switching houses, because having my personal house right next door would make things so much easier.

I've tried sending messages like I would with my own kin, but the game tells me it's an invalid recipient. I've asked in the world chat if anyone knows the kin, I've heard nothing back so my guess is it's somebody else's private kin house and they're not online when I am or they don't see my world chat messages. This post is basically a last ditch effort to get in touch, otherwise my next option would be to watch the place like a hawk and pounce in the minute the house gets foreclosed or something, which feels like a dick move but if it's what I gotta do, well... Anyway, that's pretty unlikely since it's been like a year or two since they bought the place, and I'm not gonna wait around on that happening.

Any advice on the matter is greatly appreciated :)

Returning to LOTRO and on a quest to get some class advice

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 07:53 AM PST

Hello! I am currently suffering from the form of torture known as first-semester exams. As a result, I did some procrastination pondering and came to the conclusion that I must once again intoxicate myself with the thrill of battle throughout Middle-earth. I haven't played LOTRO in several years and I was wondering if some kind soul may offer me some advice on my class choice. In the short-term, I am looking for a class more suitable for solo play which emphasizes survivability with solid damage output. In the past, I had played mostly melee-focused characters because of the pure enjoyment of cutting down enemies however I am open to all suggestions!
